Meet The Team

The Collaborative employs four of the best special education support employees this side of the Mississippi. Collectively, our staff are driven to do “whatever it takes” to ensure members are fully supported. For more details, or to contact the Collaborative staff, please view their biographies below.

megan-photo2Megan Davis-Hitchens Ohlssen

Director, NYC Special Education Collaborative

As Director, Megan is responsible for ensuring NYC charter schools have the resources and supports necessary to maintain high quality special education programs. Through weekly schools visits, onsite staff developments and city-wide trainings, Megan guarantees schools have access to ongoing support and development opportunities. Megan has worked as a special education teacher and leader in both district and charter school settings. She pushes schools to rethink and enhance more inclusive educational environments by engaging stakeholders at all levels. Megan works closely with the schools and the disctrict to advocate for high quality services and timely evaluations for students with disabilities in charter schools. Megan comes to NYC from San Francisco. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Lewis and Clark College, and earned an M.A. in Elementary Special Education and General Education as a Teaching Fellow at Brooklyn College. megan@NYCsped.org

bridget FoleyBridget Foley

Special Education Specialist

As Special Education Specialist, Bridget provides resources, trainings, and onsite expertise to support schools in developing and maintaining high-quality special education programs. Bridget comes from Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School where she worked for over 10 years – serving as a general education teacher, a special education teacher and administrator, and most recently as the Director of Inclusive Learning. Before entering the charter sector, Bridget taught in the NYC DOE as a member of the NYC Teaching Fellows. She holds a B.A. in Government from Smith College, a M.A. in Childhood Education from Brooklyn College and an Ed.M. in Leadership for Educational Change: Special Education from Bank Street College of Education. bridget@nycsped.org

Senior Coordinator, Special Populations

Patrick coordinates a wide array of events and manages operations for the NYC Special Education Collaborative & EL teams. He maintains the Collaborative’s online presence, crafts communication on events, and supports schools in utilizing their membership benefits. Previously, Patrick taught English Learners in Korea, Spain, and Boston. He has also worked in fundraising for Boston’s PBS affiliate, WGBH. patrick@NYCsped.org

Melissa KatzMelissa Katz

Program Manager, English Learner Supports

Melissa works to ensure that the city’s charter schools have access to the essential supports, resources and technical assistance in place to lead their English Learners to academic success. Her goal is to advocate for ELs and strengthen their presence and achievement in NYC charter schools. She worked as a K-5 ESL teacher for the NYC DOE for five years. During her time in the classroom, she created an inclusive environment through culturally responsive teaching and best ESL methodology, including SIOP. Melissa holds B.A.s from Trinity College (Hartford) in French, Spanish and English, and earned her M.S. in TESOL as a Teach For America corps member from Fordham University. mkatz@nyccharterschools.org
