Workshop: Preparing Students with Disabilities for Successful Transition to College

This session educates professionals about disability services and academic expectations at college so that they can make sure that their student is prepared. It provides research based information on successful transition, including:

• Knowing the law & research – this section will explain the legal changes students will encounter in prevailing disability laws at college, and what the research says are the qualities and skills that successful college students with disabilities possess;

• Understanding student’s rights and responsibilities

• Developing essential personal, academic and life skills

• Understanding college accommodations

• Finding the right college – this section offers tips to help students research disability services at their target colleges, and provides answers to some commonly-asked questions about disclosing students’ disability during the admissions process.
