Participants will engage in tasks to deepen their understanding of Multilingual Learners’ experiences in the classroom. They will use these experiences to plan lessons integrating selected scaffolds which can be utilized across content areas. Using the SIOP (Sheltered Instructional Observation Protocol) planning model, participants will be able to integrate tasks appropriate to each of six scaffolds in a lesson plan. There will be two hands on experiences where participants will use the scaffolds to deepen their understanding of the scaffolds and how they can be used to teach ELA to MLL’s and their peers.
By attending this session, attendees will leave with:
1. An appreciation of MLL’s experiences in the classroom.
2. An understanding of why the six specific scaffolds are good for all learners but especially MLLs.
3. A hands-on experience using the scaffolds.
4. An awareness of the SIOP Protocol to create a lesson plan for MLLs and their peers.
