ELL Workshop: The Internationals Approach: Scaffolding Rigorous Academic Content for ELLs
February 26, 2016
1:00 - 3:30 PM
NYC Charter School Center - Training Room
111 Broadway, Suite 604, New York, NY 10006
Presented by Daria Witt
Daria Witt is responsible for the areas of professional and curriculum development, model documentation, and other academic programs and services for the Internationals Network. In this workshop, which begins with a lesson taught entirely in a foreign language, the Driving Question that will be answered is: “How do we help our students with limited English proficiency to access rigorous content, skills, and academic language?” After an initial experience in which the content is delivered in the foreign language with no scaffolding and no supports, participants are taught the same content through activities, curriculum, and instruction that models good teaching for English Language Learners. Participants have the opportunity to reflect on the experience of the two different lessons and to look closely at several of the techniques the “teacher” uses that were effective for them. This workshop puts participants in the shoes of their students and helps them gain first-hand experience with the benefits of teaching students with the techniques expanded on in the other workshops.
**Note, this event is organized by the NYC Charter School Center and does not detract from Special Education Collaborative member seat allotments. There is a $75.00 fee, and the event will be capped at 40 registrants.
